HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting

Nationally Recognised Training

Duration: 5.5 hours 

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting is aimed specifically at workers and volunteers in this sector. The Australian Children’s Education & Care Authority (ACECQA) has endorsed this course as meeting their requirements for first aid training. 

Note - Victorian regulations require that those working with children still obtain additional qualifications for asthma and anaphylaxis on top of HLTAID012, through completion of 22556VIC Course in the Management of Asthma Risks and Emergencies in the Workplace or 22578VIC Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis.  HLTAID012 does NOT automatically award these courses, however Healthguard does offer these courses and can incorporate it into a longer training session with HLTAID012. Please speak to the Healthguard Office for further details.

  • First Aid Principles

  • Infection Control & Hygiene

  • Legal Aspects of First Aid

  • Incident Approach and Management

  • Patient Assessment

  • Basic Life Support

  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and use of an Automated External Defibrillation (AED)

  • First aid knowledge and skills relating to airway obstruction, asthma, allergies and anaphylaxis, bleeding and shock, envenomation, soft tissue injuries, dislocations and fractures

  • First aid knowledge relating to a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries

Assessment

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting course includes both a theoretical and practical assessment component. Theory assessment includes the completion of pre-reading prior to a face-to-face training session, a multiple choice knowledge assessment and practical assessments that include:

  • CPR and use of a defibrillator (Adult, child and infant)
  • Responding to 2 different first aid scenarios, including a situation where participants will need to use their knowledge and skills to determine what is wrong with the casualty.

Please note all participants must be able to perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on both an infant resuscitation manikin and an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor with correct technique, to be marked as competent.

Foundation skills

HLTAID012 includes the following types of skills as listed below, Note: If the training and assessment requires any tasks harder than this, and you feel unable to complete what is asked, we will support you through the training process.

You need to be able to:

  • Apply first aid skills to different locations and casualties
  • Read and interpret basic signs, such as labels on first aid supplies, buttons on the AED and warning signs
  • Provide a verbal report and handover in English about the situation and your first aid treatment
  • Complete a basic incident report form (written document)
  • Estimate weight to ensure safe lifting
  • Count breaths and compressions
  • Tell time to record when something happens

Outcomes

​On successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded a nationally recognised statement of attainment for HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, HLTAID010 Provide Basic Life Support, HTLAID011 Provide First Aid and HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

From 1 January 2015 when you attend a first aid course (nationally recognised training) you will need to have a USI.

A USI will give you access to your online USI account which will contain all your nationally recognised training records and results from 1 January 2015 onwards.

This is a requirement of the Australian Government Department of Industry.

Healthguard is a Registered Training Organisation and must comply with Government Legislation to maintain our registration. As of the 1 January 2015 we will be unable to issue you a Statement of Attainment for your course until you supply us with your USI.
